Why are Flowers' fiscal quarters not true quarterly periods of the year?
Flowers Foods has a 52-week fiscal year that ends on the Saturday nearest December 31. The company divides these 52 weeks into 13 four-week periods. To maintain a consistent four-week period, it is necessary to have one quarter that is longer than the other three. The first quarter is 16 weeks.
